Restoration of The Cattle Shed
Another building on Manoel Island which formed part of the quarantine facilities, and which was used to house livestock brought into port, is the Cattle-shed, originally known as il-Bovile.
The Cattle-shed was erected just outside the Lazzaretto divisions and consisted of a large square enclosure with rows of stables on the east and west sides flanking an open courtyard at the centre, whilst a number of rooms to the south served as staff quarters.
MIDI plc has recently concluded the first stage of conservation works on the cattle-shed’s facade, whilst a permit application has been submitted to the authorities for the next phase of restoration.
